When I moved to Minnesota, H and I moved in together. We were engaged but not married.
I had to tell my mom, and I knew she wouldn’t be thrilled. I knew she wouldn’t freak out but she wouldn’t be happy. I was right. She said, “As your mom, I can’t support your decision, but I trust your judgment.” Not a big deal. That’s what I expected. She wasn’t angry or anything.
We kept talking about other stuff that was going on, and then my mom asked me if I could give her and her boyfriend (of 5 years, at the time) for a ride to the airport because they were going on a cruise. I told her, “I don’t know. As your daughter, I can’t support your decision, but I trust your judgment.” My mom laughed.
That’s awesome! LOL!!
Well played, madam.
Oh my gosh, when you have six hours to spare, let me tell you about the hoops we jumped through to explain to my DEVOUTLY-ATTENDED-MASS-EVERY-DAY Catholic dad that we were moving in together PRIOR to even being engaged.
Needless to say, it went well (since we’re married now), but my poor husband tried to drink my dad’s drink-of-choice (Manhattans) and hilarity ensued.
Lucky you, my mom FREAKED. She cut me off financially and didn’t speak to me for 6 months. I wish she had trusted my judgment, because I’m still with him, 10 years later!
Well played! Like Very Bloggy Beth up there, my mom freaked out when I moved in with my boyfriend too. She’s mostly gotten over it, but there are still a few jabs here and there.
Such a cute story.
So random, I love it. We always heard the hypocritical story of my dad getting kicked out of the house for going on vacation with my mom before they were married, only for my grandparents to drive my dad’s sister and her boyfriend to the airport for a later vacation. whomp whomp.
Funny! My mom did not freak, even though we considered buying a house together after knowing each other all of three months. She did the whole, I’m disappointed, yada yada speech, and then gave me my chunk of my grandmother’s inheritance to use as a down payment.
HAHA! A perfect TOUCHE! moment if I ever read one.
