Christmas Confessions

December 8, 2010 by -R-

1. I have never tasted eggnog.

2. Last year, our only decorating was hanging up stockings. This year, we have done absolutely no decorating so far.

3. Now that I think about it, I’m not sure that we actually hung up the stockings last year. I may have just laid them on the fireplace mantle.

4. I hate the Rudolph and Frosty claymation movies.

5. We didn’t go to church on Christmas last year.

6. I try really hard to buy presents that I think people want, not what I think they should want, but sometimes that temptation is hard to resist.

7. When we do put up our tree and decorate it, we have a red and gold color scheme. It’s kind of lame to have a color scheme, but the tree looks nice.

8. I have never seen the movie A Christmas Story.

you should watch A Christmas Story. Seriously. That’s a good movie. Think of all the pop culture references you’re missing. You’ll shoot your eye out!

I am so going to download that movie for tonight.

I know the main points, I think. The kid with glasses wants a BB gun, but his mom said he’ll shoot his eye out. Someone gets their tongue stuck on a pole. There’s a leg lamp marked Fragile/Fra-gee-lay. And I think there’s something about Chinese food. I really feel like I don’t even need to see it!

I’m right there with you on 1 and 4.

Claymation is kind of creepy, plus I think both movies are depressing.

    1. Raw eggs creep me out. Even if there could be alcohol in there.
    2. Our decorations are up on the Saturday after Thanksgiving but on Christmas night I am ripping them down.
    4. I also hate these, but Rob loves them so he records them and we watch them as a family. I mostly just daydream and not pay attention during.
    5. I’m sort of against going to church on holidays because it really frustrates me that I can’t get a seat because of the all the people that only go on holidays. Last year I actually left because I got there an hour early and it was standing room only. I’m not judging those who only go on holidays but it’s the one day of the year I’d rather skip.
    6. Buying gifts really stresses me out but this year I tried not to let that happen and I think it’s working.
    7. Ours is red and silver.
    8. I’ve never seen it from start to finish, only bits and pieces throughout Christmas night when TBS plays it for 24 hours straight.

Are there really raw eggs in eggnog? I did not know that.

  4. on December 9, 2010 at 7:59 am Christine

You know I had never had eggnog for years and years, and then was introduced to Coquito, which is a Puerto Rican eggnog (which my friend made without the eggs) and essentially is a shitload of rum plus coconut milk, sugar and coconut. It is super tasty. Then I had my first *real* eggnog last year at a bar, and I tell you what, that was delicious.

I’m going to have to make you watch a Christmas Story, just so you’ll get the references. Although I’m with Stacey, I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen it all the way through, it’s kind of like a constant background noise. In lieu of a Christmas Story, I happen to be obsessed with National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. “Do you hear it!? It’s a funny, squeaking sound.”… “You couldn’t hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerin plant.” God I love that movie. Also, the movie, “Mixed Nuts” which only my sister and I have seen, but love to bits, and it isn’t good. Not good at all. BUT love it.

    • on December 9, 2010 at 8:55 am -R-

I saw Mixed Nuts! Only once though, so I don’t really remember it.

Our tree has a red, purple, and silver theme. I love it.

When Piglet gets older we will make sure he gets to decorate the bottom of the tree with kid-friendly ornaments. But for now, I love the color theme.

    • on December 9, 2010 at 8:59 am -R-

I don’t know what we’re going to do about kid ornaments. I don’t know if B will be interested in them or not. I guess we’ll find out, assuming we finally put up the tree this weekend.

I have never had eggnog. I don’t even want to try it. It sounds 100 kinds of disgusting.

All I did was hang up stockings last year too. I attempted to buy a tree, but the two I got from Target were broken and then I gave up.

I haven’t even attempted to go down to storage and even get the stockings out this year.

    Claymation infuriates me.

Okay, may not “infuriates.” But I don’t like it.

We have not done a lick of decorating either. Unless you count the glass jar full of (rapidly disappearing) red-and-white-striped taffy.

Egg nog is good, but I like to cut it with lots of milk. Like, 1/3 egg nog, 2/3 milk. With a little sprinkling of nutmeg on the top. Yum.

(Um, I am talking about the non-alcoholic egg nog you buy in cartons at the grocery. I’ve never had the alcoholic version.)

I can’t stand A Christmas Story, the thought of drinking eggnog gives me the willies, and if my husband hadn’t brought the Christmas decorations down we still wouldn’t have decorated.

  9. on December 10, 2010 at 7:10 am flurrious

I only saw A Christmas Story once and didn’t think it was that great. The leg lamp gives me the willies.

#1 needs more explanation: WHY have you never tasted it? It’s like saying you’ve never tasted broccoli, or never tasted chocolate-chip cookies: it’s a common food, so WHAT IS THE DEAL?

#8 needs more explanation for the same reasons. I can’t think of a good reason for not trying something so many other people like.

      1. I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere that eggnog has been served. I guess I could buy it a the grocery store, but is that “real” eggnog?

      8. My family never watched it growing up, and I always end up being busy when that one channel shows it all day.

      I’m not purposely avoiding either!

I like eggnog, but not if it has alcohol in it. It’s one of the few drinks that’s made better by leaving out the booze.

i hate eggnog especially since a niece drank a crapload and promptly threw it up all over our carpet one fine Christmas night.

  13. on December 16, 2010 at 12:59 pm Lawyerish

I watched “A Christmas Story” for the first time last year, and had to turn it off after about 20 minutes. I thought it was boring and not funny. But I know a lot of people love it, so maybe I didn’t give it enough of a chance.

I also have never had eggnog. I’ve had an eggnog latte at Starbucks, but never the real thing. It’s not the sort of thing I would make at home (we don’t have bourbon or whatever liquor is in it) and the thought of beating raw eggs and drinking them seems…unappealing. I think I would probably like the grocery store kind out of a carton, but I have not as yet been compelled to purchase it.
